Design Process

At Susan Kolar Couture, each gown is created through a thoughtful, couture-driven process and meaningful conversation designed to honor your vision and celebrate your individuality. From the first conversation to the final fitting, communication and collaboration are keys to success. Each step is personal, intentional, and rooted in exceptional craftsmanship.

Susan guides you through the couture process every step of the way to achieve optimal results where beauty, comfort, and meaning all come together in the end as a timeless treasure.

Step 1

Design Consultation

Your journey begins with a personalized consultation where Susan gets to know you and your vision. We discuss your style and the feeling you want your gown to evoke. Whether you share your Pinterest board, inspiration photos, an heirloom gown, or simply an idea, this stage is about understanding you—your story, your aesthetic, and your wedding day.

Step 2

Design Plan

Based on our discussion, I will translate your vision into sketches, fabrics, lace, and embellishments as needed to bring your vision to life.  Once we decide on specifics, I’ll provide a design proposal containing design services, timeline, and pricing range.

Step 3

Measurements & Pattern Making

Once your design is chosen, I take a series of measurements used to draft a working pattern tailored to your unique shape.  A toile(test garment) or muslin mockup is made when applicable to test fit, design balance, and proportion. This is an important step that lets us make any design or fit changes before the cutting into the final fabrics.

For restyling projects I assess the existing garment and plan how best to reuse or incorporate additional fabrics.

Step 4

Toile (muslin) Fitting & Design Refinement

A series of fittings allows us to test and refine the design before the fashion fabric is cut. During these appointments we make design decisions and  adjustments to further refine our pattern. Each fitting is an opportunity to bring the design closer to its final, flawless form.

Step 5

Draping & Construction

Once the design and pattern is approved, the fabric is cut and construction begins. Your piece is handcrafted with care and attention to every stitch. Through scheduled fittings the fit and design is further refined.

Step 6

Finishing

The gown is completed with hand-finishing, couture closures, and any special details unique to your design—embellishment, texture work, embroidery, or heirloom elements. This final stage is where artistry and emotion truly come together.

Step 7

Delivery & Celebration

Your finished piece is carefully pressed, packaged, and prepared for your wedding day. It is an honor to create a piece that will be part of such a meaningful moment in your life.

Whether it’s a custom couture gown, a restyle, or reimagined piece (robe, veil, purses) we celebrate the collaboration, care, and craft that went into a piece that will be a part of your most special day.
